چکیده
We carried out Chandra observations of two low-luminosity low-mass X-ray binaries, 1RXS J170854.4–321857 and 1RXS J171824.2–402934, for which previously single X-ray bursts were detected with the Wide Field Cameras (WFCs) on board BeppoSAX. Both were detected in our Chandra observations in an actively accreting state three to eight years after the X-ray bursts, with 0.5–10 keV luminosities between 5×1034 and 2×1036 erg s−1. The apparently persistent nature is remarkable for 1RXS J171824.2–402934 given its low luminosity of 10−3 LEdd. The persistence of both sources also distinguishes them from 5 other low-L bursters, which have also been seen during bursts with the WFCs but were not detected during Chandra observations above a luminosity of 1033 erg s−1. Those are probably transient rather than persistent sources.

We carried out X-ray and optical observations of 1RXS J171824.2–402934. A monitoring campaign with Chandra and Swift confirms that it is the persistently accreting low-mass X-ray binary with the lowest known mass accretion rate. The second thermonuclear X-ray flash ever was detected, with RXTE-ASM, testifies to the low accretion rate. Accretion disk theory predicts that the persistent nature an...
متن کاملDiscovery of 1 RXS J 171824 . 2 – 402934 as an X - ray burster
We report the first-time detection of a type-I Xray burst from a position that is consistent with that of 1RXS J171824.2–402934. The detection was made on Sep 23, 1996, with the Wide Field Cameras on board the BeppoSAX satellite. The burst had a peak intensity of 1.3 Crab units in 2 to 28 keV and is relatively long (at least 3.5 min). Analysis of the burst gives clear evidence for photospheric ...
متن کاملResonant x-ray scattering in 3d-transition-metal oxides: Anisotropy and charge orderings
The structural, magnetic and electronic properties of transition metal oxides reflect in atomic charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) allows us to perform an accurate investigation of all these electronic degrees. RXS combines high-Q resolution x-ray diffraction with the properties of the resonance providing information similar to that obtained by atomic s...
متن کاملQuasi-particle interference of heavy fermions in resonant x-ray scattering
Resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) has recently become an increasingly important tool for the study of ordering phenomena in correlated electron systems. Yet, the interpretation of RXS experiments remains theoretically challenging because of the complexity of the RXS cross section. Central to this debate is the recent proposal that impurity-induced Friedel oscillations, akin to quasi-particle inte...
